Alasdair Gray: A Life In Words And Pictures
Like a cross between an eccentric professor and a lovable uncle, Alasdair Gray walks unassumingly onto the stage, the rapt, silent audience seeming somewhat at odds with his slightly bashful grin. A slideshow behind him flicks through his paintings, interspersed with photographs from his past, as he explains them for us. The art is as wonderful as you might expect, and his explanations are by turns fascinating and funny. He skips rapidly through some of the slides, whilst others are described in more depth: a mural of the Book of Jonah, for example, painted “to cover a stain” on a friend’s wall, is the excuse for a retelling of Jonah, with typical wit. In his company, the hour flies past.
