‘Romantic Moderns’, the Guardian First Book Award prize winner, explores the fascinating relationship between the modernist movement in Britain and its romantic past, discussing figures such as Paul Nash and John Piper (who was regarded as a traitor to the cause of modernism for painting landscapes) and situating them as part of a long tradition of English art, rather than forming part of a distinctive break. Kathleen Jones has written a new biography of Katherine Mansfield, and, with help from a newly uncovered archive, talked about her competitive relationship with Virginia Woolf as well as her tense friendship with DH and Frieda Lawrence. Two very different, but equally exciting, perspectives on a movement that continues to inspire great fascination today.
