James And The Giant Peach (BG Touring Ltd)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Roald Dahl’s classic is adapted to good effect here, as the energetic and enthusiastic students of Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln tell the story of the boy who escapes his evil aunts with a gang of bugs inside the eponymous giant fruit. The actor playing James is a natural entertainer, and the children in the audience respond very well to him. Unfortunately, not all of the cast members are quite as strong, with occasional lines lost to poor projection, and the narration – provided by an ensemble speaking together – occasionally taking on a fairly monotonous chanting quality. There are some excellent moments though – the rhinoceros attack is a real highlight – and overall, there’s a lot of fun to be had.

Paradise In Augustine’s, 7 – 12 Aug, times vary, £4.00 – £7.00, fpp23.
