ED2011 Comedy Review: Joel Sanders – Jokes That Got Me Kicked Out Of Tennessee (Joel Sanders / PBH’s Free Fringe)

Joel Sanders is almost apologetically sincere; he humbly thanks his audience about five times for coming along. Anecdotes from twenty years in the US are reeled out one by one, and, while the show has a nice flow, it contains no real structure. His best material includes thoughts on feeling a disconnect with gay men in the public eye and a humorous letter-exchange with a solicitor. Unfortunately, for all Joel’s charm, the jokes are sparse, so this show feels more like that of a fairly accomplished storyteller rather than a comedian. He also has a habit of announcing his punchlines with, “Wait for it,” and finishing them with, “I thought that was good.” This doesn’t serve him well, either.

Dragonfly, 5 – 29 Aug (not 15), 6.40pm (7.40pm), free, fpp100.

I saw ‘Jokes That Got Me Thrown Out Of Tennesee’ on Thursday and liked it so much I’m taking another friend tonight. Of the free shows I’ve been to, this was the best so far (and I heard other audience members echoing that afterwards). It’s also the only show I plan to see twice. I agree that it had a storytelling feel to it but that’s one of the things that made it so enjoyable … and the jokes were not at all sparse. Joel also humbly and sincerely thanked us for coming – at the start, the end … and individually on the way out. Why is that wrong? This show is brilliant and I’d encourage anyone who reads this to see it and make up their own mind. I’d never heard of Joel Sanders until a few days ago but he’s now one of my favourites.

I’ve seen Joel perform in Louisville on 4 occasions. As always, he was
a delight and it was a surprise when my home town formed such a
critical part of the narrative. This is a wonderful show but is not
necessarily a gag fest from start to end (it had a more gentle tone
and was lighter on the punchlines than the ‘redneck bashing’ sets I
have seen him perform in the US). It is, however, still very funny
and what is lost in traditional jokes is more than compensated for in
the passion and quality of the stories/storytelling. This was a
sincere and intimate comedy experience. I do not know of any comedian
like Joel – not at home or here.

I have to disagree with this review. I’ve seen Joel before and took two of my friends to see him (one of which is putting on his first show this year). They (and I) loved the show – in fact the friend who is putting on his first show this year was really inspired by him. It felt genuine, flowed well, with regular and consistent jokes and I honestly cant say that I recall any “Wait for it” or “I thought that was good” style catch phrases. Bottom line is that I really enjoyed it – I’ve already recommended the show to two other friends!

A great show packed with interesting stories and plenty of personal touches. Fantastic venue – small, intimate room allowing audience members to really get into the stories. Would highly recommend taking a punt on Joel’s show, you won’t be disappointed.
