The Artists Currently Known As Magpie & Stump (Magpie & Stump Comedy Club)
By Jennifer Ajderian | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
As the eponymous model of the Magpie and Stump sit stoically in the background, five student comedians bound on-stage and, usually, stare at the floor as if expecting to be hit from below by inspiration. When they do look us in the faces or approach us every once in a while, a kind of hazy confidence comes through. Here is another motley crew of young comedians – from deadpan to jaunty with enthusiasm, and back to austere again. The show’s set-up is unclear (I’d been expecting a double-act) and at times seems disconnected, but in all, we see a wide range of topics covered, and a couple of them by performers who could easily carry a show on their own.
