The Boom Jennies: Blowout (The Boom Jennies)
By Joseph Fleming | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Enthusiastic performances frequently compensated for frustratingly inconsistent writing during this all-female sketch comedy show. The young ladies’ individual personalities – the grinning flamboyant Catriona, the gangly awkward Lizzie, the wide-eyed kooky Anna – were far more compelling than their prepared material; left in the hands of different women, these routines would have been fairly underwhelming rather than mostly entertaining. The trio’s ridiculously energetic dance routine to ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry will stay etched in my memory for weeks, while a skit concerning the increasingly obsessive correspondence of a French pen pal was initially hilarious before unfortunately petering out the second time around. To continue with tedious explosion lexis, The Boom Jennies produced occasional sparks of brilliance but didn’t blow my socks off.
Pleasance Courtyard, 3 – 28 Aug (not 15), 10.45pm (11.45pm), £7.50 – £10.00, fpp51.
