The Brandreth Papers (Benet Brandreth)
By Katie Chapman | Published on Thursday 18 August 2011
Brandreth’s rhetoric is captivating. Despite being an ostentatious Cambridge graduate who regales the audience with tales of his time in Hollywood, his short career as a renowned artist and his incidental role as protector of the royal family, Brandreth holds the audience’s complete attention. Combining brilliant acting with an intelligently constructed satirical narrative, Brandreth evokes vivid and compelling images of, for example, his rescue of the naked Duke of Edinburgh from an evil saboteur. Although the character’s references to philosophy and classics may be daunting, these are coupled with multiple references to contemporary culture and subtle, uncouth allusions to improper behaviour, serving to demonstrate the extent to which the show is a truly well-rounded, cleverly constructed and superbly performed piece.
