Where else can you see full contact girl-on-girl action on a Saturday afternoon? Roller derby – a relatively recent transatlantic import – is a fast-paced whirl of a game in which aggressive ladies in fishnet tights and tiny shorts barge past each other to score points. This match saw home side Twisted Thistles take on Germany’s Stuttgart Valley visitors, in a riveting live American-style sports spectacle. Though the commentary was unforgivably cheesy and the rules initially confusing, the atmosphere was fantastic – both in the excited stadium and at the accompanying cake, craft and merchandise stalls – and the enthusiastic staff were simply adorable. What’s more, entry for children is free, making this a delightfully unusual option for a family day out.
Meadowbank Sports Centre, 6 – 20 Aug, 2.00pm (4.00pm), free – £5.00, fpp180.
