Two lands, roughly 17,000km apart from one another, unite like brothers separated at birth – Scottish Baroque and Australian indigenous music interact in an increasingly natural and palpable harmony. This is, of course, Sonia Cromarty’s and Alice Rickards’ intention, but it’s still extraordinary that it works. David Foulis’ opening sonata in three movements, appropriate though it may be to examining the roots of Baroque in Scotland, is a sprightly but rather unchallenging and unexciting introduction to the duo’s project. What is far more interesting is how both cultures compare in their treatment of nature, such as in “Bird”, a cello piece supported by bird-whistling of the Australian outback, and “Reclaiming the Spirit”. Exquisite fusion music from a loveably quirky high-heeled duo.
