Forever a festival favourite, the Royal Over-Seas League’s Fringe series this year ended with two brilliant pianists from the other side of the world. Michael Ierace, who hails from Adelaide, Australia, steadied himself as if faced with a wild animal before launching into the dextrous trills of one of Clementi’s sonatas. Joining him on stage was John Paul Muir, an established and award-laden pianist from Auckland, New Zealand, and the pair played and swayed with almost comic synchronisation. This second piece, Mozart’s Sonata for Four Hands, provided jolly, skipping music for the festival’s end, and as ever, ROSL’s charm and uptown warmth gave a wonderful festival series, of which this performance was the icing on the Chantilly cream cake.
