Fingers tap in rhythm, not to music but to ticking watches. Booze-filled glasses are downed and refilled as Kerry Hodgkin’s soul-seeking voice puffs around the room. In spite of her rosy personality, her performance takes time to diffuse the frosty atmosphere. From a barstool, she croons about lost love; her voice sometimes flakes but always holds itself strong. Her duet partner of just one day, Malcolm MacFarlane, is a technically gifted guitarist, yet his staccato playing is emotionally defunct. Not once in their Sting cover did I feel the guitar weep. In time, I am sure this show will reach great heights, but for now, the performance is too blue and weary for this to pass the acid test.
