Shlomo: Mouthtronica (Underbelly Productions)

By | Published on Sunday 28 August 2011

One man, a loop station, and an effects machine create one of the most impressive displays of musicianship I have ever seen. It’s hard to believe all the sounds you’re hearing come from one mouth, as Shlomo builds a full band all by himself. Switching between musical genres like jazz and dubstep, he even finds time to mix audience cheers into his songs. He starts the night by showing you the ten tools of his trade, as he narrates his rise to beat-boxing glory. One segment includes the history of his family, and he creates a soundscape of his Arab-Israeli grandparents’ parties remembered from childhood. With a different collaboration every evening, each show is its own work of art.

Underbelly, 4 – 27 Aug (not 15), 9.00pm (10.00pm), £9.50 – £14.00, fpp219.
