As the climax of a half day-long public and industry event promoting Scottish ensembles, this concert saw the juxtaposition of two vastly dissimilar kinds of chamber music; the Dunedin Consort’s traditional choices from Vivaldi, Handel and Bach/Pergolesi, followed by Auricle Ensemble’s selection from William Walton and Edith Sitwell’s humorous Modernist ‘Façade’. Both groups were a success, though it was Auricle that wowed. Dunedin’s vigorous sound was everything one would expect from a dedicated, professional ensemble, but there was no chemistry between the two vocalists. By contrast, Auricle exuded a playful vibe and the two narrators of Sitwell’s poetry complimented each other perfectly. A thought-provoking insight into the contemporary chamber music scene.
