ED2011 Theatre Review: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (WDG Productions)

‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is that well-loved Shakespeare play that school drama departments and amateur dramatic societies love to put on and, more often than not, make a shambles of. I hoped that this production would be different; I was sorely disappointed. This piece was even painful to watch at times. I found myself squirming in my seat as actors that seemed wrong for their parts butchered their lines. Fairies dressed in layers of what looked like old bed sheets covered with flowers, danced (badly) around the stage to any song that included the word ‘dream’. The company is obviously very enthusiastic, which is endearing, but this show would have been better kept in the village hall.

theSpace On Niddry St, 22 – 27 Aug, 2.15pm (3.45pm), £6.00 – £8.00, fpp281.
