Almost, Maine (American High School Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

A deeply cold winter in Maine is the setting for a series of short and sweet love (or lack thereof) stories, embellished with touches of magic realism. Love is dealt with as a tangible thing and comes in many forms: a pile of slate, a painting, a large red sack, and even a tattoo saying ‘villain’. The success of the performance is audible; the crowd gasps, murmurs and sighs along with the unpredictable twists of the plots. Nevertheless, at times the actors seem a little tentative, and some of the dialogues are perhaps overly sugar-coated and cloying; but overall this is an endearing piece that delights and surprises with alternative ways of viewing the world – warming through and through.

Pilrig Studio, 8 – 13 Aug (not 9, 11), times vary, £5.00, fpp237.
