Aunt Dan And Lemon (Luna Playhouse Productions)

According to David Hare, “Wallace Shawn is at once the US’s most profound and most overlooked playwright”. You would not know it from this production. In fact, based purely on this version of ‘Aunt Dan And Lemon’ you would conclude that Shawn is rightly overlooked and should be performed as little as possible. The play is structurally unusual and complex, involving multiple stories within stories and a confusingly large number of characters. In the hands of this cast, this swiftly descended in utter chaos. There were often up to five people on stage, of whom only two would have any comprehensible reason for being there. The acting was wooden, the accents were sloppy and the experience was bewildering and dull.
