Bawbees And Ducats Or A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Piazza By Alan Richardson (Leitheatre)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
If title length were an award category, ‘Bawbees And Ducats’ would be a shoo-in. Unfortunately, it isn’t and this play has little else to recommend itself. Slow and stilted, the script plods along paying homage to classic farces and Shakespearian comedies but forgets to include enough actual jokes. The cast try hard, but their comic timing is lacking, the slapstick sections are not precise enough and their accents show the strain – even the Scottish ones. However, Don Arnott does a decent pompous actor turned rogue, the sword-fight scene is a good laugh, and the production values are pleasingly high – especially for the Fringe. The whole thing is just a touch long and dull, though; much like the title.
St Serf’s Church Hall, 6 – 20 Aug (not 7, 14), times vary, £7.00 – £9.00, fpp241.
