Breathing Water (Fregoli Theatre Company)

How unfortunate that a play entitled ‘Breathing Water’ mainly washed over me. Its narrative was often difficult to follow, not only because of its confusing non-linear time progression, multiple character changes, and swift exchanges in which the four actors finished each others’ sentences, but also because the young and enthusiastic ensemble frequently garbled their intricate dialogue. The production’s events appeared to concentrate on a factious Irish settlement, whose inhabitants suffer from deep psychological trauma as a result of repressed childhood memories; if there were incisive academic, political or social comments buried in the script, I must have missed them. ‘Breathing Water’ was neither utterly objectionable nor commendable, although this was more the fault of the disorganised playwright than the well-intentioned theatre company.
