“The impossible is all I want,” announces Caligula, and it makes everyone’s life in Rome pretty difficult. In this hugely entertaining production of Camus’ play, the emperor is driven insane with desire for absolute freedom; he chooses to exercise arbitrary acts of unbelievable cruelty, such as deciding to engineer a famine. It’s always disturbingly satisfying to watch charismatic villains, and, as he decides to pursue the ‘murderous kind’ of happiness, Gaius Caligula is entirely mesmerising, terrifying and viciously funny. The pulsing music is overwhelming; along with the intricate use of movement, it contributes to the sharp sense of claustrophobia and panic. The cast are mostly outstanding, making for an extremely atmospheric and entertaining show.
