Give The Fig A Role (Queen Mary Theatre Company)

The synopsis for this show has nothing to do with the plot, at least as far as I could tell. More of an outrageous performance art piece, this is a refreshing dose of surrealism. Like ‘The Mighty Boosh’ with fewer coherencies, chaotic and dysfunctional scenes of mundane life reflect something more existential – a nihilistic ridiculousness. Aside from attempting to understand it, the visuals were wonderfully intriguing, with performers constantly switching colourful trousers and wigs. Brilliantly timed, synchronised dance routines were a highlight – I ended up finding an abundant supply on their YouTube – with clear inspiration from French yé-yé. Some moments retain an air of unpolished student drama but there’s a marvellous genius behind this.
