Our introduction to ‘Petrol Jesus’ is disconcertingly effective, it’s just a pity that the rest of the play – though acclaimed by many - appears dull and flabby in this production. Set in Israel, ‘Petrol Jesus’ has a message but is dreadfully obvious and heavy-handed in its delivery. While a few of the confrontations between the Texan and Buddy show a glimmer of promise, the student cast don’t have the gravitas to pull it off. The real problem, however, is the script, which is uninteresting, unintelligible, literally too long by half (one hour would be quite sufficient), and filled with woeful attempts to shock. Did the Rabbi’s wife have a point beyond being raped? It escaped me if she did. Make sure the whole thing escapes you.
