Mistaking retelling events for explaining them, ‘Playing Cards And Cigarettes’ simply presents the story of an abused child becoming a child abuser. Rather than focus on the turning-point of the story where victim becomes victimiser, we’re shown a montage of various points in central character Alice’s life. This approach gives no particular insight into child abuse, and certainly nothing that the audience can use to sympathise with Alice. Attempting to give a perspective on Alice’s inner workings, the lead is shadowed by a woman dressed as the Queen of Hearts throughout the play; it adds little to the play and becomes almost comical at times. With weak performances and an unrealised goal, it is a play best avoided.
