ED2011 Theatre Review: Samantha’s Hotline (Sophie Gatacre)

I spent the fifty minutes of this horrendous show trying to stop my face from morphing into an expression similar to that found in Munch’s ‘The Scream’. Sophie Gatacre plays Samantha, a former sloaney housewife who sets up a sex line after her husband leaves her for his secretary. In reality, it’s an hour spent watching an increasingly desperate woman simulate sex, to a horrified and bewildered audience. Gatacre seemed completely out of control, mumbling to herself between lines and staring hungrily out at the audience through smudgy eyes – I’m not sure if this was all an act. It was horrible; I wanted to cry. Ignore the tw ratings explanation: here, one star isn’t bad, it’s really fucking awful.

theSpace at Jury’s Inn, 5 – 27 Aug (not 7, 14, 21), 8.05pm (8.55pm), £5.00 – £7.00, fpp295.
