Shakespeare Bingo: Titus! (Bombini Theatre Company)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Another day, another gimmicky Shakespeare adaptation and another play within a play where the performance goes comically awry – it’s familiar territory, so it’s to this young company’s credit that their particular take on the genre feels fresh and funny. Well suited to the frenetic, anarchic style, the ensemble gleefully dismembers the notorious Titus Andronicus with inane pop culture references and misguided attempts at earnest explanation, intentionally taking every opportunity to undermine their own production. Though this comedy of errors is effectively silly, it’s depthless. The bingo gimmick itself never pays off, while the breakneck delivery of Shakespeare’s lines throws away even the semblance that they’re taking the text seriously. Of course, given the title, no one would have expected that.
