You might expect this to be some madcap play involving spandex clad superheroes, like some kind of live action ‘Kick Ass’, but it is in fact a rather touching piece of storytelling, like ‘Jackanory’ for grown-ups. It’s a presumably semi-autobiographical piece about a 14 year old’s relationship with an unconventional, permanently injured hero, who helps in the aftermath of tragedies by making people feel better about their situations by comparing his pain to them; the whole thing is an extended metaphor about a gay teenager coming to terms with his sexuality. The delivery is warm and engaging and there are genuinely funny moments, although at times it verges on over-sentimentality. All in all though, it’s a lovely little piece.
