The Cagebirds (Liverpool University Drama Society)

Slam! The door closes as the lights come up. Welcome to the world of ‘The Cagebirds’. Each with their own peculiar “song” – be it about slander, indecision, or food – all possess a slipping grasp on reality. Trapped in prison and denied their freedom, they have ceased to communicate with one another. Enter the Wild One, a “new playmate” determined to find a way out and take the others with her. It’s a great premise, but the second half loses some of its momentum, and the Wild One’s descriptions of freedom lack the power and originality of the weirdly mesmerising, oddball humour of the Cagebirds’ speeches. Nevertheless, this is at times genuinely haunting and worth watching.
