The Dreamcatchers (American High School Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

This is a modern-day tragedy that examines problems arising as a result of clashes between Native Americans and conservative U.S. politics. A female ‘cop’ is the main protagonist. It’s often difficult for high school students to pull off older characters but the young actress delivers a sturdy performance. Indigenous spirits wander around the stage, donning fur and shaking sticks, and dreamcatchers hang from the rafters. This is a visually pleasing production with strong use of colour but the action is somewhat fragmented. The piece has a tendency to try and over-explain things – it should perhaps credit its audience with a little more intelligence. Not to my taste but the overwhelmingly American audience seemed to enjoy it.
