Hell has a school for emerging devils and Screwtape is its senior lecturer. This is the premise of the intelligent and masterful adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ satirical Christian novel, set during World War II Britain. “Our best weapon is that humans don’t believe we exist,” proclaims Screwtape to his devil pupils, who are gearing up to reclaim the soul of a man who has recently converted to Christianity. Much is at stake as the devils try to tempt the man to atheism and damnation, with doubt, distraction and gluttony. The dialogue is superb, articulate and humorous, though rapid at times, making it hard for the audience to absorb every loaded line. Religious or not, you will enjoy this.
