I went along to this show with no idea what to expect, and I left feeling much the same. Grierson tells us the story of Arthur Craven, supposedly his great-grandfather, whom he met in a drum and bass nightclub in Lisbon last year. This is essentially a lecture – without much dancing or boxing – on the true story of Craven, where the audience are given non-speaking, non-acting parts, used so it can be “shared together”. With no narrative, random nudity and Grierson himself essentially lacking a character, the truth becomes unbelievable. An ultimately self-indulgent and awkward piece of theatre, this could possibly hold great meaning if one was intoxicated on some mind-altering drug; otherwise it’s just confusing.
