ED2012 Cabaret Review: Rob James – Magicana (Rob James)

ED2012 3/5 Reviews ED2012 Cabaret Reviews

Making magic cool is not an easy trick, but Rob James spends the majority of this show trying to pull it off. With card tricks, sleight of hand and memory feats this is very much magic in the traditional style, and little more. There are many ably performed illusions and the warmest reaction came when James essentially robbed two men using his sleight of hand sorcery. James has a natural dry wit and was able to strike up a rapport with the audience which generated a comfortable atmosphere during the tricks that required audience participation. However, in the absence of any particularly ambitious tricks, and an underwhelming finale, this show was merely competent light entertainment.
