ED2012 Comedy Review: Always Be Comedy (James Gill, Ben Morgan)

‘Always Be Comedy’ is a basic stand-up show hosted by James Gill, and featuring Ben Morgan, Leo Kearse and Darren Walsh. Gill tries his best to get the audience going, though – while he’s certainly a likeable host – his jokes tend to rely too much on the audience not laughing, so that he can make a joke out of the fact that they aren’t laughing. Either way, they aren’t laughing. The others acts too are a mixed bag. Most favour one-liner gags and, perhaps a little too often, bad puns, and there’s as many misses as there are hits, and a little awkward delivery too. Though there are a few gems in the mix as well, lifting the proceedings from bad to average. And headliner Walsh finishes his set with a bizarre yet amusing series of pre-recorded songs, which creates an alright finale.
