ED2012 Comedy Review: Gavin Webster – Bill Hicks Wasn’t Very Good (Gavin Webster / The Stand Comedy Club)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Considering Webster’s last Edinburgh show was entitled ‘All Young People Are C**ts’, I think I can safely say I’m not his target audience, and sadly, many of the 59-year-old’s comedic references went over my head (I certainly did not feel alone in this). However, I enjoyed this hour of angry rambling storytelling, only sometimes descending into the bitterness Webster claims; his resentment towards younger comedians is depressingly clear. Frustratingly he often bent the facts or observations to suit his agenda – I’ve never heard anyone of my generation defend Hitler – although it made for funny material. This celebration and criticism of American satirist Bill Hicks was a mixed bag, but an interesting deconstruction of modern comedy and society.

The Stand Comedy Club II, 2-26 Aug (not 13), 5.50pm.
