It takes a while to see what is funny about Jennifer Carnovale. An Australian comic exposing the differences between Aussie optimism and the British focus on the humdrum, her breezy delivery makes for easy viewing. Yet, the quality of her observations is patchy and at times she is working with threadbare material. Carnovale cannot be faulted for not pandering to preconcieved notions of what female stand-ups have to offer – she steers clear of lewd jokes and material about the differences between men and women. But in the end, her set only raises a weak smile, and attending this feels less like spending an hour with a comedian, and more like witnessing the semi-amusing rant of a dear friend.
