A non-panel show approach to current affairs comedy, ‘News Smash’, hosted by Australian Xavier Toby, gives four stand-ups the opportunity to do a short topical set, along with an interview with someone from the media. It’s an interesting format, and Toby does a good job of holding it all together, but the show I saw had relatively little to do with the news and was more of a showcase for newer stand-ups, most of whom just made a tenuous link from something recent to their standard set. Not bad in itself, but I didn’t leave feeling like the news had indeed been smashed. The show’s heart is in the right place, but it perhas needs time to develop.
