Ryan Withers – One Woman Showe (Mrs Funberries / Free Festival)
By Rebecca Low | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Looking like the love child of Tim Minchin and Wednesday Addams, Ryan Withers seems confused. His ‘One Woman Showe’ is a chaotic and convoluted affair: part hokey question-and-answer style confessional; part macabre horror-show and part weird lounge singer set. Withers’ chat with the clearly terrified audience is painful, and his dry quips in response to a pair of tipsy hecklers are funnier than any of his material. In saying that, maybe I just didn’t ‘get it’. I mean, if you enjoy watching a half-naked, cross-dressing, flower-eating man jump around covered in fake blood whilst brandishing a kitchen knife, then get yourself down there. If strained laughter and awkward silences aren’t your thing however, I’d find something else to fill your afternoon with.
