ED2012 Comedy Review: The SomeNews Live Show – Free (SomeNews / Free Festival)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Steve N Allen got into current affairs as a radio DJ, but soon discovered that paying too much attention to the news was depressing. The writer of online comedy news blog SomeNews used topical stories, like the Olympics, and recurring media issues, like the focus on troubled celebrity marriages, as a springboard for some satirical observations, general gags and a lot of banter with the audience. Allen’s mostly well-delivered gags were complemented with a slide-show of photos and headlines that provided some visual stimuli for jokes. Some of his conversations with the audience enhanced his humorous points, but others were bordering on rudeness or excessive intrusiveness, putting himself at risk of alienating the very audience he feeds off.
