Valery Ponomarev Quintet (Jazz Bar)
By Veronika Kallus | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Smooth. Leaning back in the cool atmosphere of The Jazz Bar with a nice drink, late on a Friday night, escaping the busy Edinburgh August streets is a real treat. Being entertained by a great trumpeter and his locally-sourced band is mesmerising. Valery Ponomarev is not only remarkable on his instrument, but also thoroughly fit for keeping the audience engaged: we have to cheer and applaud and stamp our feet before they start each piece – so we don’t hear it if they make a mistake. Which is pretty unlikely… In addition to the skilled trumpeter, the double bassist and especially the young piano player are outstanding. Time passes far too quickly -back out into a feverish night in Edinburgh.
The Jazz Bar, 20-26 Aug, 10.00pm.
