ED2012 Musicals Review: 13 (Stafford Gatehouse Youth Theatre)

Energetic, witty, and charming in its execution, ’13′ is an adolescent rock musical bursting with energy and sentimentality. The play, which was staged on Broadway back in 2008, follows Evan Goldman, who moves to Indiana and is about to have a Bar Mitzvah. As he struggles to fit in and learns who his real friends are, he comes to terms with who he really is and what it means to be a man, and it’s an eye-opening time of discovery. This particular production is performed by a highly talented, dynamic group of teenagers who sing with energy and whose acting is well-executed; they appear professional and well-directed. The singing, the story, and the colourful range of characters make ’13′ an enjoyable musical suitable for all ages: young, old, and in-between.
