ED2012 Musicals Review: Aida The Musical (Spotlites Youth Theatre)

A professional production that balances stellar individual performances with a strong company work ethic: that’s what Spotlites Youth Theatre present in ‘Aida’, a rock musical from Musical Theatre dream team, Elton John and Tim Rice. You’d be forgiven for forgetting just how young these actors are, for their emotive range runs more than skin deep as they become intertwined with their characters; an extension of themselves. While diction lacks a little clarity across the cast, and a few of the minor parts are a little shaky in their delivery of lines (sung and spoken), the way they sustain energy between musical numbers and the narrative scenes is highly commendable and, indeed, impressive. A performance of complete conviction.

Spotlites @ The Merchants’ Hall, 12-14 Aug, 7.55pm.
