ED2012 Musicals Review: Honk Jr (Springboard Theatre Company, University of Gloucestershire)

Farmyard fun for all the family in this charming adaptation of ‘The Ugly Duckling’. Lights go up on a tableau of brightly-dressed cast members who instantly capture the kids’ imaginations with a lively song about life on the farm. The children remain enthralled throughout, while this prodcutin also achieves that holy grail quality of kids shows of offering something for the adults too; parents will find plenty of jokes aimed at keeping them amused. Humour in the form of a brilliantly acted frog and hilariously sinister villain ensure the hour flies by. Perhaps not one for very young children as it comes in at just over an hour but otherwise, unlike the poor ugly duckling himself, this hits just the right note.

TheSpace on North Bridge, 4-11 Aug (not 5), 11.00am.
