ED2012 Musicals Review: Side By Side By Sondheim (MCG Theatre / Highly Strung Productions)

ED2012 4/5 Reviews ED2012 Musical Reviews

This five-strong cast put on ”more of a show than a play” for ‘Side By Side By Sondheim’. It showcases amusing and heart-wrenching performances of Sondheim’s treasured classics, such as ‘Broadway Baby’ and ‘Marry Me A Little’. A particularly outstanding moment was Matthew Ronchetti’s rendition of ‘Send In The Clowns’; originally a woman’s song, this was a poignant and meaningful interpretation. Alongside fantastic vocals and well-rehearsed performances of tricky, fast-paced lyrics from the entire cast, this was a thoroughly entertaining showcase. Between songs the group took it in turns to introduce numbers with speeches which seemed slightly staged and unnatural but were interesting. The occasional hiccups with words didn’t detract from an otherwise highly enjoyable experience.
