ED2012 Musicals Review: Urinetown – The Musical (American High School Theatre Festival)

In one drought-ridden American town, water is so scarce that residents must incur a charge each time they wish to…relieve themselves. Lorded over by the Urine Good Company, the formidable Caldwell B. Cladwell at the helm, much its population squanders in poverty, threatened by oppressors with deportation to the dreaded Urinetown – an alleged penal colony – if they refuse to pay their urination fees. That is until local radical Bobby Strong meets Cladwell’s aptly named daughter Hope, love blossoms and a revolution begins. An enthusiastic and exceedingly gifted multitude perform the Tony-nominated musical in impressive tongue-in-cheek fashion, displaying a flair for satire unusual, but not unwelcome, in a group so young.

Church Hill Theatre, 6-10 Aug (not 8), times vary.
