Attempts On Her Life – Free (UWE Drama Society / Free Festival)
By Pallavi Patel | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Opening with a long string of recorded answer-phone messages, this performance’s beginning seemed a little slow, but on reflection I should have been thankful for the breathing space. As we were tipped into a convoluted series of abstract scenes, following the twists and turns of the story (not to mention the ducks and dives of the actors, who were rather too fond of sitting on the very low stage) became a very occupying – though rewarding – task. This is an intelligently constructed piece with some very impressive performances, but it did leave me feeling like I’d been through a postmodern theatrical wringer. Not exactly an hour of light entertainment, but spot on if you’re up for a challenge.
