Ronnie And The Other World (Paper Crane Puppet Company)
By Lia Sanders | Published on Wednesday 22 August 2012
It sounds exactly like a Fringe show, doesn’t it? ‘Orpheus and the Underworld’ reimagined with the characters from a kids’ TV show. Actually it’s better than you’d imagine. The puppetry is well-executed and there are many nice flashes of humour, such as Prometheus being tortured by his nagging bimbo wife. But some parts of the Greek Underworld fit less smoothly into the scenario. It’s been quite a while since I watched children’s TV, but it was surely never this odd: a couple who’d kill the other if they looked at them just wouldn’t fit into ‘Sesame Street’. It’s a mildly humorous jest at children’s shows but the anticlimactic ending underlines the lack of purpose in this unusual combination.
