ED2012 Theatre Review: Stick Stock Stone Dead (Crazy Scheme Theatre)

ED2012 2/5 Reviews ED2012 Theatre Reviews

The show promises to convey a ‘compelling new perspective on fairytales’, and sadly fails to deliver on most counts. A series of non-engaging readings open proceedings, with the cast recounting subtly different versions of ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. Original songs and expressive dance follow; the composition is impressive (though sometimes reminiscent of schmaltzy Disney numbers), and the singers perform ably, but the music just keeps on coming, with nothing especially meaningful to say, and no script in between to complete the task instead. There are good ideas present, and folk tales offer a wealth of interesting material, but the concept is let down by an
over-earnest execution.
