The Canterville Ghost (Machinist Theatre)
By Rachel Campbell | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
This competent company made clever use of props and space in their interpretation of ‘The Canterville Ghost’. For those unfamiliar with the the play, it concerns the haunting of an old English home where an American family find themselves settling. While at times it seemed to be lacking something – perhaps a musical interlude or just a few more characters – the play was still well-balanced and fun. The actors comically switched between roles, using a variety of costumes and props to effect the changes in character, though the unconvincing American accents were a bit disappointing and at times embarrassing; it was fortunate that the cast realised that limitation and were able to make light of it. While realism in theatre can be nice, sometimes it is refreshing for actors to prove they are acting, and in this case, just how well they are doing it.
