A Tiny Gang In Some Sketches They Wrote (A Tiny Gang / PBH’s Free Fringe)

By | Published on Wednesday 21 August 2013

There’s a forced enthusiasm at work here that reminded me of Saturday morning children’s TV. The aggressively chirpy, cheesy audience banter are particularly reminiscent of a highly strung presenter slightly too desperate to be your friend. Sometimes the sketches are funny, particularly those dealing with childish behaviour behind the scenes – actors’ antics the cast are clearly familiar with – but most feel rushed together and at times unfinished. Those involving dodgy accents or references to old adverts in particular make it clear that they’re drawing from the limited referential parameters of people who watch too much daytime television. Later, the sketch-within-a-sketch felt obligatory though was at least not funny on purpose, and had it been preceded by better material, this would have been more noticeable.

Whynot?, until 24 Aug (not 19), 4.15pm.
