Ed Byrne – Roaring Forties

By | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013

Instantly likeable despite an act that relies on an embittered persona, Byrne had the audience in the palm of his hand from the outset. Confident and full of vitality, his stories about speeding tickets and Doctors visits earned howls of laughter. Although the show focused on the joys of ageing and family life, the younger members of the audience were never alienated, as the humour is entirely universal, and no less funny for it. Slick and self-aware, Byrne obviously knows what he’s doing, and lays on just enough calculated anger that the show is prevented from descending into a rant. A joyful hour of honest, heartfelt humour.
