Recovering Catholics Anonymous (& Other Crosses I’ve Had To Bear) (Jonwayne Connolly)

By | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013

Dealing largely with the always colourful subject matter of Catholicism, Jonwayne Connolly gives a mostly solid performance. Connolly thrives when he focuses on the topics of Irish religion and his upbringing, having the audience roar with laughter at his personal anecdotes. Sadly, this comical strength is not maintained throughout the routine, and he often falls back on clichéd gags that do little for him. Had Connolly pared down his routine and concentrated on his personal observations and stories, the whole show would have been a difficult piece to fault. There are already enough comedians at the Fringe who can do gags and popular culture references to a far better standard; Connolly would be well advised to stick to his strengths.
