The Appalling Carly Smallman (RBM)
By Tom Bateman | Published on Saturday 17 August 2013
This is a frank and self-deprecating standup show, with some songs thrown in. In it Carly Smallman describes, in almost harrowingly intimate detail, the realities of her love life, her career choice, and her body image. It’s funny, there’s no question about that, and her performance is warm and informal, but somehow I don’t fully connect with it. It may be that the material lacks ambition, or that there are plenty of other comedians at the Fringe mixing comedy and music more adeptly than this. However, this show remains a valiant Edinburgh debut, and I expect that we’ll be seeing see more of her in the future.
Gilded Balloon Teviot, until 25 Aug (not 13), 7.30pm.
